The acre - 43,560 square feet - is a strange measure. Did you ever wonder how this figure was arrived at? Probably not. but I'll tell you anyway. A few centuries ago, an acre was considered to be the amount of land a man could plow in a day with a yoke of oxen. The British Weights and Measures Act of 1878 defined it as containing 4,840 square yards and this “statute" acre was adopted "by Canada and the United States.
