I found one thing in Richmond that is cheap and that is plain ole ice. We had a couple of warm days so thirst became a problem. A soft drink ordered from the sandwich shop comes foil of ice and very little flavor. A fellow with a snowball machine down here could make a fortune. Speaking of snow balling, bills are really rolling now. Many are getting killed in committee and some on the Floor. One killed was a bill to allow the Governor to appoint the head of the Game Commission instead of being appointed by the Commission. I received mail and calls against this bill from the hunters and fishermen back home opposing H and unless one comes over from the Senate side, this little jewel is now “deader than a mackeral”.
A bill passed the House, now on its way to the Senate, that would allow 18 year olds to drink beer on the premises but only 19 year olds or better can buy it to take out. This bill was pushed by
The defense lawyers of the House were successful in killing a Senate passed bill to allow bifurcated trials. Trials that would allow juries to receive the past history of criminals after they had reached a decision of guilty or innocence and a second trial would be held to determine the penalty. I remember campaigning on this kind of trial and each year it gets killed by the House.
Another interesting bill that passed was a bill leaving everything to the surviving spouse if there is no will. Any children surviving would be left out. In case of a divorced spouse that remarries and has two sets of children, the second wife only gets one
