Clatterbuck has ordered an electric brake for the shop’s radial arm saw, an item that wasn’t covered in the OSHA citations or approved by the board.
(It was an accident on the radial arm saw, described by one school board member as the most dangerous piece of equipment in the shop, that led to a parent’s request for an OSHA safety inspection. Earlier in the year, the school board approved installation of an emergency system that will cut off machinery in case of an accident. Pushing this “panic button" has little effect on the radial arm saw, however, as it continues to spin at cutting velocity for well over two minutes. An electric brake will stop the radial arm saw's blade almost instantaneously.)
