Not Less Than $5,000
Eastham said Clatterbuck had told him that total cost of eliminating safety hazards in the high school shop “won’t be less than $5,000.” He re-emphasized that the board had set a $1,000 limit on work of this type without letting the project out on bids.
Chairman Beverly Massie interjected that emergency work isn’t covered by the board’s self-imposed $1,000 ceiling and noted that OSHA had set time limits for correction on the long list of safety violations. "The board did authorize Dr. Bloomer to get the work done,” she pointed out. In addition, the board ordered all machinery involved in the OSHA citations shut down until the safety hazards were corrected, an order that would have left shop students without equipment to work with while the time consuming bidding process was followed, Massie said.
