And while she supports tightening eligibility requirements in some areas, Mrs. Buntin feels just as strongly that other welfare programs need to be broadened. “I believe strongly in Medicaid. It needs to be expanded to cover more of the poor and the near poor...but just the opposite is happening,*' she said.
The outgoing superintendent isn’t sure what upcoming Congressional action will do to welfare programs next year. ABecating the money to the spots where it will do the most good will be her successor’s job.
Mrs. Buntin will leave office on September 1 to devote her full time energies to being a housewife. She leaves behind what she believes will be a continuing experiment in searching for a way to ease the problems of the needy. "We haven’t found the best way yet of helping people,” she concluded.
