In the summer of 1731 a man named Yost Hite moved to Virginia from Pennsylvania, bringing with him a huge extended family and sixteen other families of relatives and friends. He settled near what is now Winchester, although at the time he complained that he had to send back to Pennsylvania for provisions.
Hite’s dream in his middle age was to lead in the settlement of the Shenandoah wilderness. He built roads, pestered the Williamsburg government for more land, contested the land claims of other pioneers. He wrote to family and friends back in the German settlements in Pennsylvania for more settlers. He claimed the most fertile and well-watered tracts of the land in the valley for his people.
