interests, rairiax was no match for Hite and a friendly, post-revolutionary court upheld the claims of Hite’s descendants to a huge chunk of the valley.
Two generations later, Yost Hite’s granddaughter, Sarah Chrisman, married into the Sperry family - a family rich in land and influence and part of the extended Hite circle. We know from the Frederick County deeds that one of the Sperrys - Nicholas, Jr. - sold two large pieces of land in the 1780’s, appeared in the 1790 Frederick County Census, and then disappeared from Frederick County records.
Local amateur historians have been trying to piece together the little bits of information we have about Sperry. Rappahannock legend names him as the man who built the first house in Sperryville and gave his name to the town. This legend is mentioned also in Virginia Place Names by Raus MacDill Hanson.
