hand-painted porcelain business the Borkowskis have been interested in the history of the shop, and that interest led them to their research on Sperry.
“We had heard that the building had been a sort of combination saloon and post office,” Josephine Borkowski said. "So we sent away to the National Archives for names of postmasters here in the early 19th century.”
The Borkowskis have carefully documented Sperry’s presence in the new community and have recently come across a clue that may answer some doubts about his place in Rappahannock history.
“There’s a Nicholas Spiry listed as postmaster of Thornton Gap in 1814,” said Dr. Borkowski. “He also appears in the 1810 census with his name spelled right.”
