She returns with extra preparation for continuing her education. Language didn’t present a barrier to Kirsten’s enrollment at the county high school last August since she had studied English back home in Germany. But with an added year of 24-hour-a-day practice, her pronunciation and fluency have improved.
At the same time, her native accent has faded to the point that it’s barely noticeable. Where she once stumbled occasionally searching for the right word, she now speaks perfect “Americanese,” her conversation dotted with a typical teenager’s latest slang.
Despite a full load of courses—U. S. History, biology, typing, French III, algebra II and honors English,—Kirsten earned A’s and B’s at RCHS. “Mostly A’s," she acknowledged modestly after repeated prodding. “Academically, it was easy, very easy.”
