A RICH MAN’S DISEASE? One does not have to be rich to get gout. Eating certain foods, such as red meats, and using alcohol increases ones chances of getting gout. Therefore, years ago this usually meant that the rich would be more likely to get gout as their diets were much better than thepoor’s.

Gout is a disease in which a protein breakdown product called uric acid becomes too concentrated in the bloodstream. The severe painful attacks occur when the crystals of this substance become deposited in the joints. This commonly will happen in the foot and toes, but It may also affect the kidneys and other parts of the body. There are medications that can allow a gouty patient to lead a normal life as long as he also follows certain dietary restrictions. Gout can cause changes in the joints if alfowed to proceed untreated, and It seems to affect men more often than women.
