Rap Owings, Agriculture Extension Agent for Rappahannock, said that soil testing for the correct Ph, or degree of acidity, is especially important for county residents. Owings said that, although the county soil tends to be slightly more acid than ideal, years of lime application have altered the ph so that he sees more problems with alkaline soil.
“It is important to test correctly and in time to correct soil deficiencies,” Owings said. The ideal time, according to him, is in the fall or early winter before the ground freezes. In spring, there is a backlog of samples to be tested but Owines said that it was still a worthwhile effort, since many problems can be corrected even after crops are planted. The testing service is free and is handled by the county extension offices, who then send the samples on to Blacksburg.
Owings added that the Extension Office has many excellent publications for beginners and advanced gardeners.
