Peat Moss: this will condition the mix by loosening the soil and blending with it.
Perlite: this is crushed volcanic matter which lightens the soil.
If you are constructing the garden on top of an existing lawn be sure to break up the sod with a spade and turn it grass side down before filling the area with your topsoil, sand, peat moss and perlite.
After you have blended all of these ingredients you should get your soil tested for its degree of acidity or alkalinity. Generally, most herbs do best in very slightly acid soil with a PH reading of 5.5 to 6.5.
Although many plants can be started from seeds 1 advise buying herb plants to start with the exception of dill, parsley and basil which may be grown easily from seed.
When doing my transplanting 1 use a method called “puddling in”. I mix several gallons of water with one cup of fish emulsion fertilizer and one half cup of liquid seaweed and stir well.
