As to total cost of an indexed compensation system, "we can control the amount of money that goes out by setting the base pay," Updike continued. An indexed system is what the teachers want, what they feel comfortable with, he said. “We have to work with the teachers...They have to feel comfortable with us and we with them," said Updike, recommending an index scale based on a five percent pay increase over this year's beginning salary. “I think what you said is right," responded Nelson Lane, reversing his earlier position in opposition to the proposed index scale. “To me, it makes sense.” Updike repeated. "We need to have as good relations as possible with our teachers —with all our employees.”

Non-Professionals After further discussion, the board members by consensus directed Estabrook to provide them with further information on the impact of the index scale on fixed charges—retirement, social security, life insurance, hospitalization—using a range of percentage increases on the base over this year’s starting salary. They also indicated support for an eight percent pay hike for all n on - profession al school employees: bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, etc.
Eastham noted that each dollar of pay ups the total on fixed charges by approximately 20 cents, emphasizing that the board should keep that relationship in mind.
For most of the budget work session that continued until after 1 a.m. in open meeting, it was again a guessing game for the audience as the board and superintendent referred to items bv number rather than by name. Even with copies of the current budget, the discussion was difficult to follow; in many cases, Estabrook simply noted that line item after line item was higher or lower than in this year's budget without mentioning a percentage increase or decrease.
The draft budget does include $44,000 for repairs tc the elementary and high school roofs, a recom mendation by Nelson Lane arrived at after consultation with various roofing contractors.
