Spring’s warmth entices many home vegetable gardeners to start planting. It is still too cold for many popular vegetables to grow unless the gardener provides some special protection. A cold frame will provide a favorable environment for starting seeds of early, coolweather crops such as lettuce, onions, spinach, cabbage and cauliflower. A cold frame is a structure that provides a box around a growing area. A glass or clear plastic top collects the sun's heat for the plants. The ideal location for the cold frame is one which has a south or southeastern exposure with a slight slope to insure good drainage. The basic principles for planting seeds apply when starting them early, she said. Be sure there is good drainage and a good soil mix. Sow seeds evenly in rows, cover adequately with soil and label all the plantings. Keep a check on soil moisture, temperature and ventilation.
A sheltered spot with a wall or hedge to the north will provide protection against cold winds.
Protection of plants already started can be accomplished with the use of a cloche. A cloche is a portable structure which is set over a plant to protect it from drying winds and cold air.
