The virus reaches the brain by traveling along the nerves and produces neurological symptoms such as throat spasm and paralysis, followed in almost every case by death.
Warm-blooded animals, including man, are susceptible to rabies. Animals commonly infected in Virginia are skunks, foxes, bats, and most recently raccoons. Cattle and horses may become infected, although they seldom transmit rabies to other animals. People may be exposed to rabies while assisting sick pets or wild animals. Close association with domesticated animals is a threat when rabies is prevalent in wild life.
