How the dog acquired the infection is not known although a dead raccoon had been observed near the home several days before the dog developed signs of being sick.
Eight persons had definite exposure to the saliva of the dog and four others had potential exposure from their close association with the dog just prior to the onset of illness. All are currently undergoing post-exposure immunization against rabies.
Almost two years of age, the dog had been immunized igainst rabies in February 1981.
