There is no treatment for rabies. It is possible, however, to prevent the disease in humans by administering a series of five injections of vaccine accompanied by rabies immune globulin. This is possible because of the relatively long incubation period for rabies. Even though the incubation period ranges from two weeks to nine months, there should be no delay in starting immunization after exposure to the disease.
The following steps should be taken if bitten or exposed to the saliva of a suspected rabid animal:
1. ) Wash animal bites immediately and thoroughly with soap and water.
2. ) Consult a physician and contact the local health department for advice.
3. ) Try to recover the animal. If you shoot it, do not hit the head. 4. ) Turn over the suspected rabid animal to the health department for positive identification of rabies. 5. ) Should delivery of the dead animal suspected of having rabies be delayed, place the animal in two separate plastic garbage bags and refrigerate, but do not freeze.
