The health department advises caution for people potentially exposed to animals acting strangely. Any raccoon approaching a dwelling in broad daylight can be presumed to have rabies since they normally prowl only at night. Beware of dogs fighting raccoons. Chances are good that the raccoon has rabies if it fearlessly approaches a dog.
Immunization of cats and dogs provides a good buffer between people and the wildlife that are experiencing an outbreak of rabies. Accordingly, the health department is planning further mass immunization clinics. A series of three preexposure immunization shots are available for humans who are occupationally exposed to rabies.
