Despite its limited enrollment, the little school was a success story from the start. “At the end of our second year, when we gave standardized achievement tests (the same SRA tests administered in the public school system), all but one of our students was at least one year above grade level,” Harris noted.
But circumstances forced Sursum Corda to switch from primary education to day care and pre-school. "We weren’t gaining students. I think the economy played a large part,” Harris said. “A lot of people who had expressed interest in my starting a school became financially strapped and just couldn’t afford to send their children."
