When planning the flower garden, keep in mind indoor winter flower arrangements as well as the summer flowering. A portion of the garden planned in the spring should be corn posed of plants that can be available for drying in the summer so that the beauty of the flower garden can be brought indoors through the year.
Select plants that dry naturally when placed in a dry, dark location. The st raw flower and the everlasting dry well in the air.
Some other flowers that dry well are baby's breath, bachelor button or cornflower, celosia, cockscomb, globe amaranth, honesty. Job’s tears, salvia, sunflower, artemisia. Chinese lantern, dusty miller, globe thistle, lamb's ears, lavender, poppy, sea lavender and yarrow.
Flowers selected to air dry should be picked when they are free of moisture and hung, upside down, in a dark, dry room until they are dry. Hanging them upside down keeps the stems from breaking.
Some flowers suitable for drying are best dried by methods other than air drying. Those with bright colors will retain the color better when dried by burying them in silica gel or a mixture of borax and corn meal.
Some flowers best for this are calendula. cosmos, dianthus, foxglove, gaillardia, gloriosa, daisy, larkspur, lupine, marigold, zinnia, small-flowered chrysanthemums, dahlias, sunflowers as well as opiening rose buds.
Silica gel is available at florists and garden centers. It is a substance in the form of blue crystals that can be used repeatedly to dry flowers until the blue crystals become pink. These pink crystals can be revitalized by drying them in an oven heated at 250 degrees Fahrenheit until the blue color returns.
Borax and corn meal, available at grocery stores, should be mixed one part borax to three parts corn meal. It also may be used repeatedly and revitalized by drying in the oven for more use.
As with flowers to be air dried, flowers to be dried in the drying materials should be picked when they are free of moisture.
