Ski Lodge To Be Sold -
The former ski lodge in Harris Hollow and 100 acres upon which it sits soon will be for sale, Sam Snead announced July 10.
Snead and partner Baron Heinrich Von Feilitzsch originally had planned to build a home for adults on the property.
“We’ve decided to put the place up for sale,” Snead said. “We want to run a business—we don’t want a bunch of disgruntled neighbors.”
Snead, who is a realtor, said he “probably" would list the property with another broker.
Snead anticipates a commercial listing, and said 75 of the 100 acres are designated commercial under Rappahannock’s current zoning ordinance.
Snead did not disclose a price, which he will discuss this week with an attorney “and some real estate people.”
• Ruritan Barbecue Spared
The Amissville Ruritan’s annual barbecue June 30 may have been spared a disaster due to the extra effort of Jean and Nelson Burner of Amissville.
The Ruritan’s use a deep pit to gently steam the beef over a 12-hour period. Surrounded by special seasonings, the meat is wrapped in canvas and placed on top of hot coals in the pit. The canvas is covered with a layer of dirt to hold the heat in.
Ruritans completed the pit set up around 10 p.m. Friday night, then left the pit unattended.
About 3 a m., the rains came—and came. Awakened from their sleep, the Burners, who live two miles away, were concerned the rain would soak the layer of dirt, collapse and ruin some $800 worth of beef.
They went to the scene and improvised a tin roof to cover the delicacy, and save the fund-raiser.
Many people were responsible for the successful barbecue the following day, of course. The fund-raiser helps the Ruritans to support more than 30 worthy causes in the community—from church camps to youth groups to scholarship funds—to help for the handicapped and needy.
