Being a part of those events touched me deeply, but what really hit me was the wheelchair race. Although there was only one contestant, everyone stopped just to cheer him on. There was so much support and love in the atmosphere, it was incredible. When he crossed the finish line a feeling swept over me that is hard to explain, one I wouldn’t trade for anything else.
At the end of the day, I was sad to leave — to leave that feeling of peace just to go back into the world of push and shove. The teacher and kids thanked all of us for volunteering; but when I think about it, it should have been me thanking them.
I grew up a great deal that day. I had realized that sometimes you have to be on the inside to understand what people only see on the outside.
My story isn't finished yet, though. Less than a mile from home, my friend and I started talking more. Oh, just about little things, but that didn’t really matter. We were talking! When she got off the bus she said, “Bye.” Then she smiled a great big smile. The wall had been broken.
