Fair days began in Amiaavitte last Thursday, July 5. Unfortunately, the weather was not so Ihfr^-ntfn pelted Amnsvile carnival goers for two of three days.
By Saturday, the final day of the event, organizers still were wondering if they’d be able to meet carnival expenses, let alone make a profit.
These carnivals—known by many as a highlight of summer in Rappahannock—are the primary source of ftinds in most instances for county volunteer fire and rescue squads.
Bad weather does more than dampen spirits—it could destroy a volunteer company’s efforts to maintain or provide more service to its community.
“These small, rural fire departments raise 75 to 80 percent of their funds (during carnival days),” said Steve Leake, of the Sperryville firefighters, whose carnival began last night despite questionable forecasts.
“It hurts here when you have a couple of nights of bad weather. ”
Hurts may be an understatement: Most of each carnival’s take-in immediately is swallowed up by the high cost of amusements and attractions.
