The CIT board of directors will begin meeting after July 1, but it isn’t clear when construction of the CIT building will begin.
To help development in rural areas, the legislature also established the Rural Virginia Development Foundation. It is designed to ‘identify, encourage and coordinate new approaches to economic development in rural communities” in the state.
A number of election law changes were approved, including a provision requiring the state to notify voters by postcard that they will be purged from the voting records if they do not vote at least once in four years.
Under the new law, registrars also will be able to register voters in contiguous counties. Voters living in Fauquier and working in Prince William, for example, could register with the Fauquier registrar during designated times in Prince William.
To deal with tampering in the growing computer field, the Assembly established a new section called the Virginia Computer Crimes Act, which establishes penalties for unauthorized tampering with computers.
The Assembly also established a new state holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. It will be celebrated ;«n the third Monday in January, which is now Lee-Jackson day, in honor of Robert E. Lee and Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson. The holiday will be renamed Lee-Jackson-King Day.
