Last year, during the three-day July Fourth weekend, 10 motorists were killed on Virginia highways.
This year, the Division of Motor Vehicles, in coryunction with the Division of Court Services, is trying to prevent such accidents.
This Fourth of July marked the beginning of RAID — Report All Intoxicated Drivers — a program DMV is instituting in an attempt to increase drunk driving arrests.
“RAID is a statewide call-in program similar to Crime Watch, but related to highway safety,” said Court Services Director R. Dean Irvine.
“There are 18 states with similar programs for drunk driving enforcement — their statistics show about 25 percent of citizens’ calls result in good drunk driving arrests,” Mr. Irvine said.
“Virginia’s program will be evaluated, and if it’s doing as well as the other statewide programs in the country, we will continue it,” he
