Alan A. Poe marked his 36th year as an employee of The Fauquier Times Democrat Co. on June 18.
Mr. Poe, production manager of The Fauquier Democrat and manager of Warrenton Printing, joined the company in 1949 as an apprentice. He learned the printing trade from then printing superintendent Irvin Garrett, Alwyn Ash and A1 Cox, becoming an expert Intertype operator and compositor, and learning also the presses and other equipment.
When Mr. Garrett retired in 1970 Mr. Poe became printing manager, and was named to his current position in 1975.
His work for The Fauquier Democrat has not been entirely in the printing field, though that has been his chief occupation. For several years in the 1950s, Mr. Poe, a devotee of all sports, also acted as the paper’s sports editor, spending many hours at home compiling statistics and writing reports on the county’s teams after attending the games.
Mr. Poe was honored at a reception June 24 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Boley near Bealeton. Mrs. Boley is the company’s business manager.
v. Democrat General Manager John T. Toler said: “The past 35 years, and particularly the past 10 years, have seen continuous, radical change and rapid growth at The Democrat and Warrenton Printing. I am always amazed at how Alan has managed to stay on top of all the new technology.”
“Alan’s 35 years of dedication to the printing profession and The Democrat provides an excellent example for young people entering the trade,” said Mr. Toler, who has worked with Mr. Poe since 1967.
