The Fourth of July celebration in the Town of Washington went so smoothly one almost would think crowd control was planned.
It was.
Before hundreds of cars and thousands of people packed city streets, the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department prepared a plan to ensure the safety — and serenity — of Independence Day here.
It was a simple, but effective, plan — one that could have been called Operation Presence.
The Shenff8 Department had only two goals: Control anyone who tipped a few beers too many; warn anyone who might toss a firecracker into a crowd.
To achieve these goals, county deputies walked their beats like bobbies, chatting informally with people along the way, while, at the same time, watching the crowd with the discretion of Secret Service agents.
Their measures largely were preventive — a word of caution here, snuffing a match before it ignited some fireworks there.
