it seemed like the deputies were everywhere. It was impossible to turn a corner without noticing a deputy, or a pair of deputies, quietly going about their business.
Their business was not just in the Town of Washington on the Fourth of July, either. When duty called elsewhere in Rappahannock, officers quickly were dispatched.
The department and its officers went beyond the call of duty:
They spoke in advance with key organizers to find out about their needs and concerns.
They seemed undaunted by a long, somewhat hot, day.
They kept up with traffic and people pouring nonstop in and out of town well into evening.
They had a plan and stuck to it.
They deserve special recognition and, informally the day after, got it.
Following the Fourth when there were so many good things to talk about, the exemplary effort of the Sheriffs Department was a primary topic of conversation around town.
