It was at this point that Virginia politics of the most visceral variety came into play, and there is nothing more visceral in Old Dominion politics than the election of judges. It becomes a battle between the titans of the two houses of the Democratic dominated legislature.
The Republican minority, of course, is shut out of the process. The overwhelming Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate make their nominations, bind their members under the unit rule, and thus the election of their nominees becomes a foregone conclusion.
But the battles within the Democratic caucuses over who will be the nominees, and between the House and Senate over whom they will finally agree upon, make the petty disagreements between Democrats and Republicans seem as child’s nlav
