Energy-Savers9 Loans Available
The Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) announced November 16 the offer of $5 million in no-interest or low-interest loans to homeowners considering energy-saving home improvements.
According to a VHDA press release, owners of home built before 1980 may borrow from $600 and $6,000 at interest rates ranging from aero to 12 percent. Loan amounts and interest rates are based on income, family size and energy costs.
Home improvements that may qualify for financing include replacement of storm windows and doors, insulation and new and upgraded heating systems. To find out if they qualify, homeowners can call tollfree: 1-800-572-3206.
• GED Tests Are Dec. 8, 15
The General Educational Development Test (GED) for people who did not ftilfill high school graduation requirements will be given on December 8 and 15, according to a press release from Warren County Public Schools. GED tests will be given at the Warren County Vocational Center in Front Royal. Testing on both days will begin at 8:30 a.m. and aid at 4:30 p.m.
The tests are administered by the Adult Education Service of the State Department of Education. By achieving satisfactory test scores, people 18 and older may earn a high school equivalency certificate.
Applications will be accepted through December 4. A person can apply at the Rappahannock County School Board office. The fee for the , test is $15. For more information, call 987-8773.
• Red Cross Collects Funds
The Fauquier Chapter of the American Red Cross is now collecting flinds for African famine relief, according to H.T.A. Nevill, chapter chairman.
This is part of a worldwide campaign by the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise $37-million for emergency relief operations. The American Red Cross has set out to raise $5-million nationally, and is asking each of its chapters to contribute an amount equal to at least 8 percent of its 1964 income. For the Fauquier Chapter that would be approximately $600.
According to the Red Cross, Africa is suffering its worst fomin* in this century as a result of a drought that has endangered 185 million people in 27 countries. In some places there has been no rain for two years.
The League of Red Crass and Red Crescent Societies has already distributed 26,440 Urns of relief supplies, but because the famine has intensified the worldwide campaign for additional funds is necessary. Fauquier and Rappahannock citizens wishing to contribute should make out their checks to the Fauquier Chapter, American Red Crass, noting that they are for “African Famine Relief,” and mail them to: Fauquier Chapter, American Red Cross, 68 South Third Street, Warranted, Va. 22186.
