It was at this time Prescott said she learned firsthand of a second reason why Rappahannock was perfect: its people.
Working as her own contractor, Prescott went to county craftsmen from then on, explained her situation and got nothing but help. "They all trusted me,” she recalled with eyes, like basins, swelled with tears. She said one worker, now retired, “did everything to save me money that he could,” which included working weekends for next to nothing.
She moved into her unfinished home during a particularly cold October, soon to realize that her property with locust aplenty for firewood had yet to yield a single stack.
She recalled going to Merrill’s Esso, now the location of the Washington Post Office, to ask where she might purchase some firewood. As was customary, a small crowd was gathered at Merrill’s, just talking.
After getting the information she needed, she left, stopped briefly at Sloppy’s, then headed home. When she arrived, a stack of firewood already was unloaded. It took her months to find out who the good Samaritan was. "It was just a gift,” she said.
