Luke would not speculate on how soon a condemnation suit could be filed. “It would be a guess at this point as to when it’s going to be filed,” he said.
The board will move forward with its plans to condemn the 138-acre tract. Contacted by telephone this week, board Chairman Richard Latham and Supervisor Hubert Gilkey III maintained that the site proposed is a good one.
“This site in my opinion is a good one. It has a good buffer zone,” Supervisor Gilkey said. Gilkey co-chairs the board’s landfill/animal shelter subcommittee with Supervisor Nelson Lane. Gilkey added that Robert Foreman, solid waste control supervisor from Culpeper, said the site looked “very good” during a walk-through with Gilkey and Lane before the supervisors’ November 5 vote to condemn the property.
Supervisor Gilkey said Mr. Foreman did not consider the site’s location between the Covington and Rush rivers a problem, because the landfill would be located in the center. Gilkey emphasized the importance of getting an engineer in to complete tests to determine if the landfill could cause water pollution.
Supervisor Gilkey said he did not think accessibility to the proposed landfill location was a problem. “It’s no worse than the landfill going to Warren
