Prescott associated health rides and destruction of a pristine environment with the proposed landfill location. “Here we are with clean air and quiet. We’ve been assured the bulldozers will only work at night. Can you imagine looking at Venus with the bulldozers humming in the background?” she blurted.

She said she is concerned about water and air pollution, an increase in traffic on Route 621 and litter she believes will fall off vehicles while people i drive to the landfill. “I’ve endured these 12 years, and commuted, with hope of coming out here. (This has been) my goal...Now that I’m here and could enjoy everything, I feel what I have aimed for may not all be here.”

Leaning on a cane, Prescott alluded to the severe arthritis she has suffered three years, which led in August to a hip-joint operation. “When you’re in this type of condition, things are harder to take. I’m fortunate the Lord has given me some faith to accept whatever is given me.”

Even though she retired two yeare ago, she continues to work part-time, teaching English at Wakefield School. “I’m supposed to have been retired. I will have to work until I can no longer work,” she offered.

Prescott said she hopes county supervisors will change their minds. She noted the positive approach to alternative solutions other residents have initiated.

She also noted the strength of family, in particular her mother, age 76, who lives in Bethesda, Md. After hearing of the proposed landfill site, Prescott said she called Mom. “I was crying. I said, *You won’t believe this, but....”
