Said Chairman Latham: “It seems to me it would be an awful burden” to citizens if dumpster locations were eliminated. When asked if the county could maintain the cost of the dumpster operation, Chairman Latham said he believed the coet would come down considerably once dumpster maintenance was put up for bid. “Any competition you have would help (lower costs),” he said.
Chairman Latham said he shared the concern of residents who believe elimination of dumpsters would lead to “unofficial” dumping sites. When told some residents were sure the dumpsters would be dropped, he responded, “I don’t know how it got to be the plan unless a vote was taken that I wasn’t aware of.” Once the landfill is in place, however, Chairman Latham agreed that any one of three scenarios could develop: The county could keep dumpster locations if affordable; residents could pay for their own trash collection by private contractors; residents could take their own waste to the landfill site.
Whether or not an animal shelter will be placed on the landfill also remains undecided. The landfill/animal shelter subcommittee name at least implies that the two will coexist. Said Chairman Latham: “No decision (has been made). First, we’ve got to get the landfill and get it into operation.”
