The Concerned Citixens of Rappehannock County (CCRC) urge the supervisors to act now to drop their plan to condemn 138 acres of prime land on Route 621 for a sanitary landfill Consider, if you will, these facta:
The cost to the taxpayers will be out of sight. Road-access problems alone are overwhelming. Highway Department officials assure us there is absolutely no precedent for state condemnation of right-of-way land on a graveled road. Thus, even if the required improvement fimds were available for Route 621, the county would have to pay for condemnation of that land.
Moreover, say highway officials, no improvements can be expected in the dangerous approaches on Route 626. So going ahead with this site would mean extremely dangerous access for users, or prohibitive costs for taxpayers — or both.
And what about taxpayer costs for preparing this site, assuming that is even technically possible? As our ad in this issue of the News points out, these costs alone are likely to be burdensome in the extreme.
