The article quoted in the Rappahannock News by Extension Agent Birgitt Thornhill on dietary cholesterol is misleading and may give false comfort to the unwary reader. The article could not have been written any better by the Missouri cattle lobby.

The pioneer work of Ancel Keys many years ago established the now unquestionable relationship between high cholesterol, high Jht diets and the increase in hardening of the arteries and cardiovascular disease in America. All present day treatments for the number ine kffler in this country (there ars now a million deaths a year from. ctttinnsculai^dfceasaO start with a low'cholesterol, low fat diet; i. e., the American Heart Association, the Pritikin diets.

Many similar studies such as Dr. Flynn’s in Missouri have been done with similar groups or medical student (they seem to make the best guinea pigs). One at Harvard University took a group of normal students and placed them on a high-cholesterol, high-fat diet for 16 weeks. During this time, they were made to exercise in order to keep their normal body weight and their blood cholesterol remained normal The next 16 weeks they were not allowed to exercise while still on the same diet. The students gained weight, became sluggish and their blood cholesterol rose dramatically. The common denominator in the Harvard and the Missouri study was that the maintenance of normal body weight is an important factor in keeping blood cholesterol at a normal level.

In the longest ongoing study of cardiovascular disease in America, the Framingham study, it has been found that the risk of developing high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease is eight times as great in the obese subjects than in persons with normal weight or less than normal weight.
