The Washington Town Council continued its efforts to develop a new town charter, and worked on several ordinances during its meeting on Wednesday, December 12.
Doug Baumgardner, legal counsel for the council, presented a town eharter it the meeting that he termed to be

charter provided for aO of the town offices, and enumerated all of the power* of the mayor and town council.
The charter also provided for appointed offices that may or may not be fiflcd, and stated that the town treasurer would be appointed instead of elected. Washington’s town treasurer is elected at present, and possesses a vote on the council. Council member Newbfll Miller objected to changing the treasurer's status, and Baumgardner told him that alterations would be made according to the council’s specifications.
Miller also questioned a clause in the proposed charter that would give the council the right to levy a a town property tax. “I think that if you don’t have the right then you wont have it, and I dont see any need for Washington having an additional tax above what is paid to the county,” said Idler.
A motion was made by Miller that the charter specify that the council has
