To the editor
In your editorial, of Dec. 13, you plead for the county’s citizens to trust and respect their public servants, especially the Planning Commissioners at this time. As I read the editorial, I could not help but notice the similarity between Rappahannock News, Washington Post and the New York Times. These larger papers plead for their readers to vote for Fritz Mondale and Gerry Ferraro and guess what? They were wrong, as is the case at hand.
The Washington Post had "dogged” our incumbent president until Election Eve and then made their pitch which most readers were already prepared for. The same has happened with Rappahannock News. For months we have read the paper seeing dearly which side it was on, so the editorial was not a surprise.
Neither trust nor respect can be attained by whining for it. Nor can they be demanded. Both are won from service rendered or not given at all. But trust, respect and credibility can be developed if this is really what we want. Here’s how: First, if you are a public official, either elected or appointed, keep your personal business and public business separate. Better ■till if you are interested in real estate business stay away from public office because of the personal advantage your position could give you. Don’t tell the people that you, yourself, the public official, perceive a conflict of interest and hut abstain from the decision making process of the body you were elected or appointed to. Second: The law does not prohibit real estate dealers from being appointed to the Planning Commission or the Equalisation Board, as the few in fttvor of this arrangement are constantly bringing up. But neither is it a requirement to be in real estate for the Board of Supervisors or Judge to appoint them, with the resulting probMPHs
Let’s let the current toms of office expire for all these real estate people on the respective boards and remmiasiona with thanks for service rendered and replace them with people that have known common sense, good Mr—e and without a suggestion of conflict ot interest. This will help build trust and respect.
