professor of physics. Now examples of Willis’ work can be found in the Northeast and Southeast, and she is still working on contracts in New York while she attempts to finish restoring her house on Mt. Prospect Farm in Washington, Va. She is not working professionally in Rappahannock.
“Most of my work has been contract, or commercial, and residential work with 86 percent being historically related,” said Willis.
One of the most impressive examples of Willis’ work is the Thayer Award Room at West Point. The room has a two and a half story high ceiling, and honors Thayer award winners who exemplify the concepts of Duty, Honor, Country through their record of service. The room was described by a former superintendent as “the single most beautiftil room at West Point.”
Willis is now working on the new admissions building for West Point, which should be completed in 1986. For that project, Willis has incorporated chandeliers and wall sconces made by Charles Eldred of Washington. Another one of her projects has 40 portraits, and she is using lighting for the paintings from the Middle Street Gallery.
“The first step in a project is to do a consultation with the client when I primarily listen to the client’s ideas and likes and dislikes,” Willis said. “A good designer is a good listener, and a designer’s job is to listen to what the client wants and then present the ideas in the right way.”
After the consultation, Willis usually does three plans with the help of an architect at tpnes. The client then chooses which plan he or she likes, and then Willis’ role changes to an interior contractor. “I contract all of the separate jobs involved to trades people, coonh
