Mayor To Support
Charter Chance
Leesburg MayorRobert E. Sevila announced this week that he will support an amendment to the town’s charter proposed by a four-member majority of town council.
The majority is seeking the char-, ter change to strip the mayor of his power to make appointments to town commissions, including the powerful Board of Architectural Review. Sevila had said he opposed the move because; appointments to the BAR should not be politically motivated.
The change would give each member of council one appointment to the - BAR and other boards. However, in exchange for the mayor’s support, council agreed to approve SeVila's recommendations this year.
Both local legislators—Sen. Charles L. Waddell (D-33rd) and Del. Kenneth B. Rollins (R-32nd)—said last week they would have trouble supporting the charter change unless it received unanimous approval from council.
