The excitement of the first day of deer season was in full evidence at W & J’s Grocery on Rt. 231 this past Monday. Wilma Burke, the proprietor, had been up since 3 a.m. to open the grocery, which also becomes a a check-in station, by 4. By 2 p.m. five deer and one turkey had been checked-in — including a 10-point deer.
Like many of the men that passed through W & J’s on Monday morning, Carl and Johnny had made little effort to wear brightly colored clothing. “You have to take a chance on everything,” Carl remarked. “I don’t really know if deer are colorblind, but I figure deer always spot the orange — they always run from you; I just dress for the weather,” Carl added.
