Neighbors buy castle
Buyers from throughout the East bickered for the Melrose Castle estate, but two neighbors of the 663-acre Fauquier County property turned out to be the highest bidders.
Carlton L. Good, developer of the November Hill Equestrian Center near Manassas, paid $409,000 for the 19th century castle with 14-foot high ceilings, 16 rooms and an observation tower.
Ned Evans, another local resident and owner of Spring Hill Farm in Casanova, purchased the newer, 3,360-square-foot home and remaining 653 acres of farmland for $1,240,000.
Together, the two Casanova men put up $1,649,000 for the historic estate, southeast of Warrenton on Route 602. According to 1984 tax records, the property is assessed at $1.8 million.
Melrose Castle Farm is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and is the rumored home of buried treasures. Its most recent inhabitant was Margo C. Bryant, a foxhunting enthusiast and antique collector who died in 1977.

Over the years, it’s been called the “Wreck Stretch” —and the statistics back up the nickname.
There have been 106 accidents this year on Warrenton’s .8-mile Broadview Avenue.
Although the number of injuries and damage costs haven’t been complied, Police Chief Dale Koglin said the figures would be “astronomical”
Between 40,000 and 50,000 vehicles daily use Broadview Avenue, and the figures double on weekends and holidays, Mr. Askew said.
