Dr. Jerry Martin, Dr. Krebser’s partner, said other buildings in town have provided no parking spaces. “You can’t hold us to a different standard,” he said.
Council member Bill Wickens said the structure’s plans looked attractive. “My only concern is with congestion,” he said.
Dr. Krebser said a traffic pattern could be made that would require cars to enter on Gay Street and exit through a rear lane.
Council member Evelyn Willis said she recognized the Social Services Department’s needs and that the building would be attractive. “I just don’t want it there,” she said.
“We can’t deny someone the use of their property if the plans conform to our requirements,” said council member Newbill Miller. “Whether or not we want something is no consideration.”
Wickens said the building would have an intensive use. “I would want to find out how many people are in and out of the welfare office on a daily basis,” he said.
