In the event the impeachment move might be successful, there are at least two possible candidates for the chairman’s slot waiting in the wings. They are former state Chairman George McMath of Accomack and John Alderson of Botetourt, who chaired President Reagan’s Virginia campaigns in 1980 and 1984.

Beyond all that, the insurgents have targeted a number of unit (county and city) chairman for removal when local reorganizational meetings are held in the spring.

It must, of course, be remembered that those plans all are being made in the immediate aftermath of the crushing defeats the party suffered in the Nov. 5 elections.

However, a dissident leader who requested not to be quoted by name, views the present condition of the party as a golden opportunity to

move the party back toward the political center, where he acknowledges that the democrats, once again, reign supreme.

However it works out, the “advance” at Ingleside should tell us a great deal about the direction of the GOP in the months and perhaps years ahead.
