High speed
To the editor:
Last week in General District Court, State Trooper R. A. Newlin was reported to have stated that during a motorcycle chase his car reached speeds of 100 miles per hour.
There are very few roads if any in Rappahannock County where driving at that speed has any hope of being safe. Skill goes out of the picture around 75 to 80 miles per hour. At that point the driver is along for the ride, and the victim to whatever decides to pull out in the road.
Well, it could be me, or my wife, or a friend pulling out, and I would appreciate it if next time Trooper Newlin would use some common sense and save his high speed for real emergencies, not a $70 traffic violation. Even then, I am not sure what emergency justifies 100 miles per hour on that section of a highway.
