The Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will be held this year on Thursday, Nov. 21, and the Fauquier unit is joining in urging smokers to take a day off. . .from smoking.
The 1985 goal is to get at least one in every five smokers to give up cigarettes from midnight to midnight on Nov. 21.
The Great American Smokeout is now in its ninth year as an annual nationwide celebration. Begun in 1974 by a newspaper editor in Monticello, Minn., it was observed nationwide for the first time in 1977. Now it has spread to other countries such as Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Australia, South Africa, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
