The Rappahannock County Elementary School halls were alive with the sound of music Saturday, March 1 as the Rappahannock Lions Club held the sixth annual Bland Music Contest.
The annual Bland Music Scholarship Program assists and promotes cultural and educational opportunities for the musically talented youth of Virginia. The program consists of elimination contests in two categories — vocal and instrumental. The first place winners at the club level progress to the regional competition, then district level, and then state level.
First place winners on the club level were Gina Fletcher, vocal, and Tara Fisher, instrumental.
Lions Club member and chairman of the contest, Paul Nichols, greeted interested relatives and friends of 11 talented young musicians by giving a history of the contest.
