Item: Rappahannock County’s tax rate is in the middle range of counties in Virginia. At 58 cents, it is in a group of 20 counties with tax rates ranging from 55 cents to 61 cents, while some of the more populous counties, such as Fairfax and Prince William, have rates that are substantially more than twice as high. Among rural counties, Rappahannock County is in good company.
The editorial quotes a bumper sticker in the course of its argument. I can do that too. Not so long ago, I saw a bumper sticker in Newton, Mass., that read, “My house is worth more because of Newton’s public schools.” Our public schools are in fact a community asset, the worth of which is closely related to the value of our real estate and the vitality of our community. We simply cannot, and should not, permit such hemorrhagic losses of our teachers to continue.
