To the editor:

We are deeply disappointed in your editorial of February 27 about teachers.

Ever since we moved to Rappahannock County we have been treated to the annual cry of underpaid teachers for substantial raises in salaries which is greeted by an equally loud chorus in reply that says that taxes, particularly for poor farmers, are too high and that the county can’t afford more.

It is quite clear that when more than one-third of this county’s teachers depart in one year, to be replaced by a large contingent of new,' and often first year, teachers, we are paying a high price to train teachers who then leave our children to get jobs in school systems that are willing to pay for experienced teachers.

Clearly, teachers here don’t get enough pay. All of our lovely mountains and sunsets fail to pay a single day’s rent for any teacher. And that long summer vacation may seem wonderful but it is payless.

There is bitter irony in the complaint that we can’t afford to provide a good education for the children of the poor because their parents can’t afford it. We can go on lamenting that there ought to be some new Sources of revenue other than property taxes, and repeat this little performance every spring while our children wait and wait for their elders to act. But isn’t it time at long last that the Board of Supervisors stopped complaining about all the things it can’t do?

We would like to suggest that the supervisors take the lead for a change in dealing with a problem that won’t go away. There will always be taxpayers too poor to afford higher taxes, but that should not prevent the Board of Supervisors from finding ways to tax those of us who can afford to pay higher taxes. The board can protect poor taxpayers and at the same time find more revenue to pay higher teacher sala
