Mr. Nichols continued, “The Lions of Virginia were not content that a monument of granite should suffice to memorialize the work of the author of our official State Song. Therefore, as a permanent living memorial, they established the Virginia Lions Bland Music Scholarship Program, awarding each year upon the basis of competition two scholarships for musical excellence, one each to a vocal and an instrumental contestant.”
“Today the state awards for both vocal and instrumental winners are; first place — $1,500 each, second place — $800 each, third place — $500 each, fourth, fifth and sixth place cash awards of $300 each,’’^concluded Mr. Nichols. “The project is financed entirely through voluntary contributions from the Lions Clubs throughout the State of Virginia. ”
Any boy or girl, vocalist or instrumentalist, attending a Virginia elementary school or high school was eligible to participate. Local vocal participants included Ginny Fletcher — first place, Angela Keys — second place, and April Williams — third place. Instrumentalists included
